Lectio divina, or sacred reading, is an ancient contemplative practice that helps us engage with text in a way that points toward the divine creative spark in ourselves and the universe. In our modern world, where we’re barraged with information, it can help us slow down, be more attentive, and move toward transformation.
I’ve created a number of ways you can connect with a community of others interested in reading as a sacred practice, and engage with it on your own.
Be sure to check out Sacred Reading on Substack, which offers podcast episodes, passages for contemplative reading, seasonal study opportunities, and more.
Free online meetings
In 45-minute Zoom meetings, free and open to all, I lead participants through the process. To sign up to receive a Zoom link for future meetings, use the contact form below.
Dates and Times
The next scheduled sessions are listed below (in Central European Time, please convert for your own zone!)
- Monday, October 13, 7 pm CET (Zurich)
- Saturday, October 25, 4 pm CET (Zurich)
Meeting Format
Meetings will start promptly at the scheduled times. If you come in late, please mute your microphone and catch up with the practice as you are able.
Each 45-minute meeting will follow the same format:
- 00:00 Gathering and Welcome
- 00:05 Reading – engaging with sacred text
- 00:10 Reflecting – pondering inwardly or through creative expression
- 00:15 Responding – with a personal prayer or intention
- 00:20 Resting – silent contemplation
- 00:25 Optional sharing of thoughts and experiences
- 00:40 Rounding off and goodbye
Reading will consist of a short text that I read aloud slowly a few times. A different, independent text will be read in each session. Reflecting, Responding, and Resting are silent, private practices, but I will give some verbal guidance at the beginning of each section.
The sharing time at the end is completely optional for those who wish to stay on and have some conversation with others. I do ask that those who stay for this time be willing to speak as well as listen.
Readings and Resources
I will choose a different reading for each session, from the Bible and other sources appropriate for contemplation–not always religious. I welcome suggestions for readings, if you have any favorite passages.
I’ve also created a list of a few resources you might find helpful.
