Ten Book Blogs I Love

For Top Ten Tuesday, it’s a “love freebie” so I’m naming ten book blogs I love (plus one for good luck). These are not my “top ten,” because that would be too difficult to pin down, but they are definitely some of the blogs I read the most often and enjoy very much.

What’s one of your favorite book blogs? Tell me in the comments and spread the love!

  • Calmgrove is one of the first blogs I ever followed; we have a mutual interest in fantasy literature, Arthurian myth, and quirks of language; his witty and erudite posts always give me great pleasure. Along with the lovely Lizzie Ross this blog took over my Witch Week event a few years ago, for which I’m so grateful.
  • Girl with Her Head in a Book is another longtime acquaintance. I’m always so impressed by her long, detailed reviews, and in recent years by how she keeps up the reading and blogging pace with a small child in tow. It’s fun to read her observations about life with her little one, and I’m sure he’ll be reading on his own very soon.
  • At Howling Frog Books you’ll find brief, to the point reviews about an incredible variety of literature from pulp science fiction to obscure classics and diverse around-the-world voices. We’ve connected over our appreciation for Elizabeth Goudge and Diana Wynne Jones,
  • Necromancy Never Pays is the place to go for more in-depth, thoughtfully opinionated reviews by a literature professor with eclectic tastes. I think it’s the only place on the internet you can find a list of books which prove that “necromancy never pays,” just in case you were uncertain.
  • Relevant Obscurity, subtitled A Classic Literature Journey, is (as you may deduce) focused on classics, with a personal touch that resonates strongly with me.
  • Babbling Books also has lots of reviews of classics, in a penetrating analytical style that always brings up new ideas for me to ponder.
  • She Reads Novels has a focus on historical fiction, as well as historical-slanted fantasy, and as our reading tastes overlap to a large extent I’m always finding something of interest here.
  • There is so much to enjoy at Book Jotter, but especially the amazing weekly “Winding Up the Week” post which gathers an incredible array of bookish posts and other articles from around the web.
  • The Book Stop is home to a fellow Oz fan and our reading tastes in adulthood remain very similar — ranging across a number of genres. I always find lots of recommendations for books I want to read when I stop by here.
  • There are a number of nonfiction-centered blogs, but Doing Dewey was the first one I found and still one of my favorites. Fiction and nonfiction reviews are both powered by unstoppable curiosity and interest in all there is to learn from reading.

I’m just getting started — I could go on to create another list of ten or more, and maybe I will do that soon …

  1. Thanks so much for your kind words! Looking at your list I see that I am in good company. Though I know some of the other blogs I will check it the ones that I do not know.

    Happy reading and blogging!

  2. Thank you for your kind words and for a virtual friendship over the years—you were among the earliest cohorts of bookish bloggers I followed—and also for entrusting Witch Week to Lizzie and my tender care! And through you I’ve also followed some of the other literature lovers you’ve cited here, another cause for celebration. 😊

  3. Thanks for mentioning me! I already follow some of the other blogs on your list, but I’ll have to investigate the ones that I don’t.

  4. Now I think I am going to have to make a tag line for myself somewhere that identifies me as “thoughtfully opinionated.” What a great description! Thanks for mentioning my blog, and my list of books in which necromancy never pays.
Like the others here, I’ll have to visit a couple of your other favorites who I don’t already follow.

  5. This is of great encouragement for me, Lory. And I know I sound like a broken record, but that year of Reading New England…. 🙂

So happy to share the book blogosphere with you and such a nice group of people.

  6. This is a wonderful post! It reminds me of the old days of book blogging, Bloggiesta weekends, and all the bloggy events. I only know about half of the bloggers on your list, so I will have to check out the others!

  7. Some great ones there! I have to mention Heaven-Ali and Kaggsysbookishramblings of course, and Whatsnonfiction has been a regular read since I discovered her in Nonfiction November 2019!

  8. Thanks for sharing! Almost all of these are new to me (except Doing Dewey). I would like to follow more blogs but I’ve been finding it hard to find bloggers who write about things that align with my interests. These sound promising.

  9. Thanks for including me, Lory! I always appreciate hearing your thoughts on whatever I’m writing about. I can’t wait to look at the other blogs on this list.

  10. I know and follow some of them, but it’s always great to discover new fellow book lovers, thanks for sharing 🙂
